Although the effects of HVAC are well known, the design of these systems has not been given much weight in hospital infection control guidelines. Nevertheless, the design of HVAC systems plays a significant role in the overall infection control of a building. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has published guidelines that stress the importance of cleaning HVAC systems. It also advises hospitals to check the cleanliness of HVAC systems frequently to ensure their effectiveness and efficiency.
To conduct a scoping review, we reviewed eleven relevant publications published from 1959 to 2019. The first paragraph outlined the health effects of HVAC when it is used in medical treatments. The second paragraph outlines the health effects of HVAC in a general ward setting without distinction between direct body cooling and room air conditioning. Both types of evidence were compiled in two tables. While some conflicting information was found, this was resolved through discussion within the reviewing team.
